Time is an odd, mutable thing -- and every action taken or not taken has consequences in reality that create new and different realities that show us what would happen if we did go down the 'road less taken' even if in another reality we opted for another route. When you throw Time Lords and their TARDISes into the mix, things get really crazy.

And so we come to a nexus in the time stream of The Doctor's life -- indeed, the period following the great Time War -- where three realities diverge: the dominant reality has The Doctor regenerate into a moody bloke with a Northern accent who favours a black leather jacket and traveling about with this chavvy Earth girl named Rose. Then there's the ennui-ridden, semi-Victorian version with the really interesting sideburns who battles the Shalka invasion underneath the Earth's crust. And then we have the third version of the Ninth Doctor -- a little stockier this time, still going for a somewhat romantic look, who's accompanied by a plucky Earth girl from the 1960s named Emma. He's the one who decides he's sick and tired of this whole 'saving the universe' thing, and he wants to throw in the towel, go off and marry Emma, and let the rest of creation shift for itself, because it's bloody old enough to not need a bloody babysitter to change its nappies anymore.

It's the third version of the 9th Doctor we're concerned with here, and he's not in the least bit happy to have the 12-7 communicator pop up under his nose when he's supposed to be picking out what colour cummerbund he intends to wear for the upcoming wedding.
